Five airports in the eastern Indonesia regions managed by state-owened company, PT Angkasa Pura I, currently could not accommodate the over capacity of passenger and cargo traffics, unless expansion program should be taken immediately. The five airports are bali denpasar’s Ngurah Rai, East Java Surabaya’s Juanda, East Kalimantan Balikpapan’s Sepinggan, South Kalimantan Banjarmasin’s Syamsudin Noor and central Java Semarang’s Achmad Yani.
Angkasa Pura I spokesman, Merpin Hutabarat reported by daily Bisnis Indonesia said, expansion program for the five airports has to be implemented to compute with the fast growing passenger and cargo traffics with average 11 percent annual growth.
Currenthly Ngurah Rai has the capacity accommodating 10 million passengers annually, but the traffic now has reached 11.1 million passengers per year, said Marpin, adding that AP I projected the Ngurah Rai airport expansion for a capacity of 25 million passengers – 10 million domestic and 15 international passengers per year.
He explaines, for the expansion program, AP I has allocated a fund of Rp 1.7 trillion for Ngurah Rai domestic and international terminals modernization. At the same time for the expansion of Sepinggan airport terminal approximately will cost about Rp 1.57 trillion and projected to be completed by 2013. The Sepinggan cargo terminal would be also managed by AP I, last year cargi traffic figures reached 37.9 million ton or an increase of 21 percent comparated to the previous year of 31.2 million ton.
Beside Ngurah Rai and Sepinggan airports, AP I has plan to increase the capacity of Juanda International Airport from the current 8 million to 12 million passengers and Semarang’s Achmad Yani Airport from 800.000 passengers to 3 million passengers per year.
